About Us
The Starry Night Initiative is a global non-profit organization that aims to minimize the harmful effects of light pollution in cities and spread awareness about sustainable lighting practices. It focuses on implementing a shield on current energy-wasting street lamps and advocating for the creation of lighting usage policies. Together, members worldwide will be able to come and help combat light pollution in their city, helping us create a more sustainable and starry sky for the future.
“Ever since I moved to the big city, I noticed that the stars I once looked up to at night disappeared. I realized that it was because of light pollution after researching, and I founded Starry Night Initiative december of 2022. After many long nights, combined with effort from each member of the Initiative, some people in my city claimed to have seen the stars for the first time since they were kids. Even those in other countries where we have our branches say the same. I am super grateful for each and every one of you out there helping out in your own neighbourhood, and to new members, welcome!!”

THE ISSUE
Light pollution affects 80% of the global population, causing energy waste, disrupting ecosystems, harming human health, and hindering astronomical research. Uncontrolled outdoor lighting wastes billions of dollars annually and contributes to carbon emissions, exacerbating global warming. Wildlife and plant cycles are disrupted, while artificial light exposure at night affects sleep and health. Additionally, light pollution diminishes celestial visibility, impacting astronomical research.
Energy Waste & Global Warming
Uncontrolled outdoor lighting wastes billions of dollars annually, contributing to carbon emissions and global warming
Disruption of Plant & Animal Ecosystems
Light pollution disrupts wildlife circadian rhythms, alters migration patterns, and impacts plant growth cycles.
Damages to Human Health
Exposure to artificial light at night disrupts melatonin production, leading to sleep disturbances and increased risks of cancer, metabolic disorders, and mood disorders
Disruption of Astronomical Research
Light pollution diminishes visibility of celestial objects, hinders telescope effectiveness, and limits access to clear skies for astronomers

Combat Light Pollution Today!
As technology and society grows, so will the amount of light released into the skies until there isn’t a space left on earth for perfectly dark skies.
